»Also, some communities have "Welcome Wagons," people who visit new residents with information about businesses and attractions in the area, etc, which could also provide those residents with neighborhood association information. When I lived elsewhere, the businesses who were promoted in the basket the Welcome Wagon representative brought to welcome us also paid a small fee to support the services of the individual making the visits (I asked). However, in addition to being friendly and personable, the best welcome wagon consultants here would be culturally aware and speak multiple languages, or possibly utilize the help of translators, to support the multi-cultural diversity we have in Des Moines. Ideally, they would live in the neighborhood they support, though that may not always be possible..
»The local Realtors or realty agencies could help provide neighborhood association contact information to new residents and/or could identify new home sales to the neighborhood associations. I believe recent home sales are also reported in the newspaper, right? There may be privacy concerns, but names aren't necessary to provide the association's information to the new owners, but if the information is in the newspaper, it is public information already.

»Get people interested in their neighborhoods-i have lived in my house for 8 years and dont think we have a neighborhood group, never heard of one and neither have any of my neighbors! when the house sells-someone should be there to tell new owners what all is going on and what there is available.

»Based on legal descriptions on the assessors site, the boundaries appear to be:
The south side of the street of Bell Ave
West of SW 12th Street
East of SW 14th Street
And the north side of the street of Broad Street
»A very noticeable vacant building across from the high school on 9th has overgrown grass and has been a pre- / post- school hangout for teens who appear to be smoking, among other possibilities. The least that could be done is to keep the weeds cut regularly and have a police presence to deter teens from loitering there.
The long building near the NE corner of Army Post and SW 9th has been up for sale or lease, as far as I know, for the entire 12 years I've lived here. Is there any possibility of bringing a quality business to it, or to tear it down to build something new and worthwhile? How long must a business site be vacant for something to happen?
Aside from those locations, a beautification project on SW 9th, extending from Army Post to Thomas Beck could be fantastic. Many houses on 9th could also stand some improvement in "curb appeal" (paint / landscaping).
»Yes, updating with new playground equipment, and sports courts if possible, would be a great start. Include a new water attraction near the playground too.
Refurbish the existing shelters / facilities and build in more benches (in specific areas, anchored in the ground).
Clear some brush and excess trees from the wooded areas to create hiking trails (Do any exist now? I haven't seen any when visiting.).
Dig out existing benches that have been half buried under mudslides (unless that has already been accomplished?).
Build a lookout tower for an even better view of downtown on the north side of the park.
Connect the bike trail from Grays Lake through / past MacRae Park (down Thomas Beck & SW 9th).
Create a community garden.
And add some flowers to brighten this park up.

There are currently 161 registered users on the site. That number has steadily grown since the site went live in February. Myself and other City Staff log onto the site daily to review the conversations and ideas that are being shared. We utilize the input that is shared, when appropriate, into our short and long term plans for the City. Look for an article on RevitalizeDesMoines.com in the upcoming issue of City Source, as we continue our efforts to draw new users to the site.
